Environmental Responsibility

Bio Security

Don’t abuse it or we will lose it.

Here at Lakesman we recognise how vitally important protecting and preserving our natural habitat is. By adopting a few simple procedures you can help us play our part in ensuring a safe, sustainable environment for generations to come.

The Protocol

Check. Clean. Dry.

01

Check

Check your equipment, boat, and clothing after leaving the water for mud, aquatic animals or plant material. Remove anything you find and leave it at the site.

02

Clean

Clean everything thoroughly as soon as you can, paying attention to areas that are damp or hard to access. Use hot water if possible.

03

Dry

Dry everything for as long as you can before using elsewhere โ€” some invasive plants and animals can survive for over two weeks in damp conditions.

Why It Matters

Derwentwater has already been invaded

Derwentwater โ€” the location for Lakesman Triathlons โ€” has already been invaded by New Zealand Pigmyweed (Crassula helmsii). A number of other nearby water courses including Buttermere, Crummock, Wast Water and Ennerdale are not yet affected.

Invasive plants and animals harm the environment, block waterways, clog equipment, and are extremely difficult to eradicate once established. Failure to follow biosecurity guidance risks prosecution under the Wildlife & Countryside Act, 1981.

๐ŸŒฟ
Small and hard to spot
Invasive species can be microscopic and easily spread on damp equipment or clothing without you knowing.
๐ŸŠ
Higher risk at events
Events concentrate athletes from many different locations, significantly raising the risk of introducing or spreading invasive species.
๐Ÿ’ง
Two weeks in damp kit
Some invasive species survive for over two weeks in damp conditions. Always dry equipment thoroughly before using it elsewhere.
